Popular artwork celebrating Buddhism display in Exhibition

The exhibition named “Buddham Sharanam Gacchami”, showcases the art created by iconic masters of modern Indian art and encourages the historic art and culture of Buddhists across the world.

A 6-feet tall sketch of Sanghamitra ‘the daughter of the emperor Ashoka’, displayed at the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) where she carries a sapling of the holy Bodhi tree on her way to Sri Lanka in order to spread the teachings of Lord Buddha.

The iconic Sketch, created by master modernist Nandalal Bose is one of the art pieces showcased at the exhibition inaugurated by Meenakshi Lekhi, the Minister of State for Culture, and Kundeling Tatsak Rinpoche, the Buddhist monk of Drepung Gomang Monastery.

The Union Minister of State for External Affairs & Culture, Meenakshi Lekhi, twitted that “It’s a request to visit the Buddham Sharanam Gacchami which will be open until June 10, 2023 for the public at the National Gallery of Modern Arts, India Gate, New Delhi.

The exhibition also displays Upendra Maha Rathi’s paintings including ‘Buddha on Flames’, and ‘Seated Buddha’ along with various sketches and drawing in ink and pencil by Bose.

This exhibition highlights Buddhist art and culture across the world. One can witness here, “Ascension” by Arpana Caur, the tempera painting ‘The Eternal Beggar’ by Arup Das, and the ‘Feet of Buddha’ by Hungarian artist Elizabeth Brunner.

Some of the paintings featuring the ancient event of King Devanampiyatissa receiving Sanghamitra, the daughter of Ashoka, and the sapling of the Bodhi Tree in Anuradhapura.
